What are the features and functions of the dust seal?

Oct 27,2022 / BY DEVELOPERS
The dust seal is installed on the inside of the cylinder end cover, and the main sealing lip is exposed to the air. Prevent external dust, rain and frost and other dirt from entering the inside of the sealing mechanism, affecting the viscosity of the hydraulic oil and scratching the sealing lip of the internal seal.
Othello dust seal has the characteristics of good wear resistance, extrusion resistance, impact resistance, small compression deformation, and easy installation.
Othello dust seals are mainly used in general hydraulic systems, machine tools, mining machinery, metallurgical machinery, standard hydraulic cylinders, general machinery and other equipment.
All hydraulic cylinders must be fitted with wipers. When the piston rod returns, the dust ring scrapes off the dirt stuck on its surface, protecting the seal ring and guide sleeve from damage. The double-acting wiper has an auxiliary sealing function, and its inner lip scrapes off the oil film adhering to the surface of the piston rod, thereby improving the sealing effect. Dust seals are extremely important for protecting critical hydraulic equipment components. The infiltration of dust will not only wear the seals, but also greatly wear the guide sleeve and the piston rod. The impurities entering the hydraulic medium will also affect the function of the operating valve and the pump, and may also damage these devices. The dust ring can remove the dust on the surface of the piston rod, but does not damage the oil film on the piston rod, which is also beneficial to the lubrication of the seal. When the dust ring is designed, it must not only adapt to the piston rod, but also must play a sealing role in the groove.

Dynamic function: For an effective wiper ring, the contact force of the lip relative to the piston rod must be large enough. This effect is easily obtained with elastic materials having a relatively high hardness. Polyurethane with a hardness of 94° is a particularly suitable material for wipers. Its properties also include high modulus (hardness), excellent wear resistance and low compressibility. This material can be used in most applications in the temperature range from -40° to 100°.
Static function: An unreinforced, single-acting wiper designed for use in closed installation grooves, where it is difficult to provide an effective seal in the groove. This is due to the loose fit of the wiper in the groove. Only the contact of the sealing lip with the piston rod provides the sealing force of the wiper against the cylindrical surface. As the temperature decreases, the entire wiper shrinks and there is a risk of leakage between its outer diameter and the groove. To achieve satisfactory results, this situation must be compensated in the design of the dust ring.
